Meet Doctor G

Happy Member Monday everyone! Today we are highlighting Greg aka Doctor G aka Doc. He is another one of our Founding Members and part of the “commitment club” at our 5:15 am class.

Doctor G brings healthy competition to every workout. He will even win the warm up! We love how he challenges himself to always do the prescribed workout and relentlessly works towards his fitness goals.

If there’s running in a workout, it’s a guarantee that he will finish first! This is great motivation for the rest of us to work on our endurance.

What brought you to Functional Fitness in the first place?

Prior to starting functional fitness, I was a runner. In fact, I had never been a gym member nor lifted a barbell. My initial hope was that functional fitness training (a couple days a week) would improve my running. To my surprise, I fell in love with the diverse training, daily challenges and the Sunshine culture. I still run, but now schedule my runs arounds the WODs.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?

Initially, I felt uncomfortable with many of the movements especially the lifts. Today, I’m more comfortable knowing my personal strengths and weaknesses. A few of my weaknesses have become strengths (ie double-unders). I still have many weaknesses, but my outlook on them has improved. I now look forward to working on and improving these areas.

What was your first “bright spot or ah-ha” moment?

Initially, I was overwhelmed by the variety of movements. Daily, I found myself wishing I was better at multiple movements. I didn’t have time to work on each of these movements. Over time, I found many of these areas slowly improved even though I did not practice them. My “ah-ha” moment came when I started to see these areas improve without defined practice. As my general conditioning, flexibility and strength grew, I improved in many of these challenging areas.

What are you working on now?

I continue to strive for my first bar muscle up.

What’s your favorite Sunshine Functional Fitness memory?

During a particularly difficult 20 minute AMRAP (as our competitive 5:15am class lay bent over trying to breath), Coach Jeremy shouted, “Someone do something!”.

If you’re looking for a workout partner to compete with, who will push you to give your all in a workout, join Doctor G at Sunshine Functional Fitness! Sign up for a No Sweat Intro to discuss your goals and how we can help.
